What a truly disgusting vote just occurred in the United States Senate. In a nation torn apart, beaten down by a never-ending pandemic and on the verge of mass depression — both economic and emotional—the Republican Party made a clear choice this evening. They chose to turn a blind eye to treason. They chose to double-down on Trumpism. They chose a thug and the mayhem that he hath wrought.
The message to all who participated? To all who stormed the steps of the United States Capitol? You are on your own. You gathered together and broke into the holiest of our houses, and you did it without provocation from your supreme leader. You intended to intimidate, to threaten, and to kill. And that’s all on you. You, crazed rioters, enraged citizens, were both the match and the flame. You lit yourself on fire. You stirred your own pot. You were both the inciter and the incited. You spread the Big Lie and you believed it.
How sad that you are the only ones who will be held responsible. You will be arrested. He won’t. You will go to jail. He won’t. You will forever be insurrectionists in the story of America.
